It sounded perfect for a hungry belly on a late afternoon.
The one-pound laulau at Kuhio Grille sounded imposing. On the menu, at least, it's staggering. Once it arrived, hmm, nice. Open it up. Juicy. But imposing? Not really, not for laulau lovers. Two pounds, maybe that would have been a challenge.
But it's not about volume and size. This is a great laulau plate, and I treated myself to extra poi. Sitting down indoors for laulau, not a common thing for me. But the heat outside on a Hilo afternoon was real, so sitting in air-conditioned confines with our H1 Thunder basketball team and devouring great food — a blessing.
