The area is spacious, barren and quite a bit more crowded since the last time I here. Ocean View, I was told back in the 1990s, was a habitat for isolationists, even fugitives. Off grid. Completely. Water cachement systems. But there were a few stores and a gas station, and all the fresh air — when there's no vog — that a free citizen could ever want.

It's a trip to go to the post office and see so many more people living here. Still a lot of hippies, mostly aging, perfectly content. It reminded me of the sturdy residents of Salton Sea, that area in California that was once a vacation wonderland. I wanted to check out the grocery store, but there wasn't enough time. The stopover at Milolii had me way behind schedule with Naalehu and Pahala ahead.
Like a lot of towns around the Big Island, the ocean is not easy to get to without a ride. This area felt like a desert town, which is why I probably connect it to Salton Sea. Elevation. Not a ton of rain on this side of the island. One day I'll revisit and get a better feel.
