The Lion King (2019)

It's not better. Actually, might not be as good. But nothing really tops the original The Lion King, and the 2019 version is so different in so many ways, that comparison doesn't do it justice.
2019 Lion King is simply entertaining and, because the characters are drawn to real-life specs — and not cartoonish — every encounter, every stink eye or glance between species has a very real National Geographic-predators-rivals-about-to-gnash-each-other-now vibe.
It is not quite as kid-accessible as the original, which felt like a musical built for animation. This one feels more like fascinating CGI that is gripping, occasionally spooky, and often times gripping. The one common denominator with the original is that Jon Favreau's direction allows us to become emotionally attached to characters, even giving a new wrinkle or two along the way.
Note: I got to see this in RFX 3-D, which was so much better than I expected. In fact, the last few 3-D flicks I've seen were really good. It's probably just taking me time to get used to that fact.
'Nuff said.
