Angel Has Fallen is A Modern-Day Fugitive

Sometimes, the best defense is great offense. Technically, there are enough holes in this plot, starting with a drone attack, to make any conspiracy/assassination theorist/nerd lose his or her sanity. But suspension of reality is a trick that isn’t mastered by many. Gerard Butler owns this.

On paper, this is standard Butler fare, an explosive, fairly simple action flick. And in some ways, this rings true to Butler’s on-screen persona. The plot is simple, but the execution is enthralling. If this feels a lot like The Fugitive, you’re not alone.

Nick Nolte as father of a high-level Secret Service character (Butler) was perfectly cast. Their chemistry lifts and otherwise solid film that had little humor most of the time.

Critics always want an original theme and script. Butler, who is one of the film’s producers, has found his niche in this one and Den of Thieves. The casting. Morgan Freeman as the POTUS is unbeatable. The explosions. In Regal’s RPX, I never enjoyed them like this. The showdown. Butler movies love to have that final showdown. The reasoning behind it, I didn’t care for.

Much like the movie’s climax, there is a certain simplicity and slightest of deceptions that make this work well. Like Den of Thieves, expect this to air three times a day on HBO sometime soon.
