The Divine Fury
Regal Cinemas Dole Cannery
Pupule rating: 3.5 (out of 4)
The first thing I said to @fatlark when the film ended was, if this had been made in the US (or anywhere but South Korea), this wouldn’t have worked. There are just a few elements that make this work, and far more numerous reasons why Divine Fury could have failed.
And yet, this was two-plus hours of entertainment. Not an action flick pretending to be a comedy. Just direct, small cast, intense action. It has a rhythm that is somewhat predictable, so maybe critics didn’t like that. But this is what it is and nothing more: an exorcist action movie with a tremendous, if unusual buddy duo. This film shines brightest when Father Ahn is gracefully mentoring this MMA champion who “hates God” yet is willing to fight alongside the priest against demons.
It sounds wacky and borders on tacky. It ain’t perfect. But if they can reunite this cast for a series or sequel, I’m all in.
At another level, this could possibly be the start of a new genre: Asian superhero mutants. #divinefurymovie
