One for underdog in Korean epic, The Battle: Roar to Victory

A retelling of any pivotal battle in war is prone to all sorts of potential issues. I have no idea how factually accurate each and every scene in this film was. It certainly paints a picture with clarity, and even with the literal bombast on screen, there was plenty within the historical tale about the bond between this pack of resistors.

It’s a Rocky-versus-Apollo Creed/Drago/Clubber Lang, or David-versus-Goliath epic. There are a lot of gripping screens, and two penultimate moments that I won’t spoil here.

It’s a good enough movie that most viewers who can’t give a whit about war/history will be compelled and lured into this, just the way the rebels — one group is know as the Korea Independence Army (KIA) — used savvy and knowledge of the mountains and forest to even the battlefield with the invading Imperial Army of Japan.

Will this film play in Japan? Unlikely. It doesn’t even matter. The more truth the world has on film or video, whether it is a documentary or dramatized form, the better.

This poster is black and white, but the film is in color.
