Here is the Kapiolani Blvd. bridge over Manoa-Palolo Stream near Kaimuki High School. We grew up around a half-mile down the road and rarely came this way. No car so mom usually had us walk to Star Market in Moiliili or catch bus to Foodland at Ala Moana. Market City might as well have been on another island.

This is the second bridge up from Ala Wai Canal. The first is on Date Street. In between the bridges, wild pigs occasional stroll on the banks of the stream to eat. It’s currently overgrown. No piggies.

The timing of this bridge, built in 1950, was similar to the one mauka on King St. (1948). Not long after, Kaimuki HS was built and the Kaimuki/Waialae Ave. district prospered with development of a once barren terrain mostly occupied by brush and an occasional cow.

Kaimuki, adjacent Moiliili and Kapahulu continued to thrive until the late 1960s, when the Lunalilo (H-1) Freeway was completed. Business in Kaimuki declined as Hawaii Kai and the rest of East Honolulu became the new destination for a new class of Honolulu residents.
