Makiki Ditch bridge on Kapiolani Blvd.

Kapiolani Blvd. bridge over “Makiki Ditch”. Very obscure in a high traffic area, but really nice work as a curved structure that bends maybe 20-25 degrees. This is next to the old Coco’s Coffee House, which later was demolished and rebuilt as Hard Rock Cafe and currently Honolulu Coffee. Walked around this block thinking they should’ve kept Coco’s. It was a unique looking landmark. We would stop in while transferring bus on the way home from Washington Intermediate School. Not to buy coffee, but to use the restroom. The waitresses and managers always let us in. Those was da days.

Maliki Ditch, or Stream, is similar to other minor waterways that empty out through Honolulu ahupuaa. I suppose when they built a concrete pathway to control flooding, it got “ditch” attached to its name. The stream is visible up to King Street, running adjacent to Kalakaua Ave. It is under street level before that.

The entire area was once a thriving watershed and breadbasket for the community. Can we Google Earth 1900?
