Video: Waihi, Manoa Streams

Long before the watershed was covered and filled, before paved roads and enormous hotels, lo‘i and loko were prevalent. Pristine Waihi Stream still feeds into Manoa Stream, but back in the day, there was no Ala Wai Canal. Manoa Stream emptied at ‘Apuakehau, also known as Muliwai o Kawehewehe, located at Helemua between the Royal Hawaiian and Moana Hotels. Waihi Stream remains a vital feeder of the watershed, and also a major concern for potential flood control planners.
