There's enough wrong and right about "The Wrong Missy" to keep Adam Sandler's Happy Madison Productions busy for eternity. This is not "Uncut Gems." But what if it tried?
I can't help wondering if that would've been too high a bar, taking this cast and putting the onus on the writers to develop something on par with Uncut. Speaking of on par, that's been the standard for Sandler's litany of comedies. In a world where most studios are fearful of delving into that genre, he pumps them out and moves on.
David Spade is almost unrecognizable here, playing the straight man in a very understated role, and very well. Lauren Lupkus goes way over the top in a series of physical, bawdy, Sandler-ish comedy scenes that parents should be aware of. Not for the young.
After awhile, the sexual aggression and jokes get old. Lupkus is impressive as her
unleashed, drunken fervor turns into more of a thoughtful, sober (?) supporter of Tim, Spade's character. It's completely unrealistic, the laughs are aplenty, but by the end, it is a popcorn flick for adults only. And within seconds, poof...
TWM does the job during this COVID-19 lockdown. It will bore some, offend some, but truly take a viewer to another world.
Kudos for the location, Hawaii's Ko Olina Beach Villas Resort.
