Scholarship offer No. 19 came as no surprise to Titus Mokiao-Atimalala.
Washington made the opportunity available to the Campbell junior football player on Thursday. The Huskies are the 10th school from the Pac 12 Conference to covet the services of the two-time Star-Advertiser All-State wide receiver.
“I was kind of expecting this offer for awhile. Kinda been in contact with them,” the 6-foot-1, 170-pound playmaker said on Friday. “They’re a great team in the Pac 12, one of the bigger and better teams, so that’s something to look at. Give God all the glory.”
As a junior, he had 62 receptions for 1,136 yards and 18 receiving touchdowns. In ’18, as a sophomore, Mokiao-Atimalala hauled in 75 passes for 1,385 yards and 14 TDs.
One of his recruiters is former island standout Ikaika Malloe. Another is defensive backs coach Will Harris. In part-time work roaming sideline to sideline on defense, Mokiao-Atimalala had six interceptions, including two pick-sixes against O’Connor (Ariz.).
“I believe they’re looking at me as a DB. As of right now, I’m kind of slipping into it. I’ve had the opportunity to play on both sides of the ball. A lot of the schools are giving me the option to play on both sides of the ball and wherever I fit better is where they’ll put me,” he said.
Washington has made a pronounced effort, with success, to bolster the roster with Polynesian talent in recent seasons. Faatui Tuitele, Saint Louis’ All-State defensive player of the year in 2018, was a major get last year. So was Kahuku All-State linebacker Miki Ah You.
“It helps because there’s more guys that I know like Miki and Tui. They would make it more conformable for me if I went there,” said Mokiao-Atimalala. who carries a 3.5 grade-point average.
Another member of the Class of 2021, Mililani linebacker Wynden Ho‘ohuli, also has an offer from UW.
The list continues to grow. With that come more texts, calls, dialogues. Between workouts at Phase One and workouts in the neighborhood — he and older brother, Hawaii-bound Tamatoa Mokiao-Atimalala sometimes run on the street — there has been more time than usual to connect with coaches during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Of the 19 offers, all but four come from so-called Power 5 conferences. Hawaii was on the ball early. Notre Dame offers plenty of pizazz. Mokiao-Atimalala is focused more on chemistry. He could a little fish in a big pond, or a big fish in a small pond.
“It doesn’t really matter. I would love to play on a big stage. If that’s in a small town, it is what it is. Wherever I’m more comfortable at, that’s where I’m gonna go,” he said, with a nod to the gold and purple in Seattle. “The jerseys are nice, though.”
