Good news for fall sports: DOE announces Aug. 4 opening

The Department of Education made it official this morning. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that Aug. 4 is the first day of classes for public-school students.

This also means that the process is underway for student-athletes to return to sports this fall. While the Hawaii High School Athletic Association meets to determine any potential changes, Aug. 17 remains the official start date for football practices. Other fall sports are expected to begin practice on Aug. 31.

The possibility of stoppages due to virus spread would also bring the likelihood of schools closing doors temporarily this fall. With that would come a halt to fall sports.

Caution has been the constant theme since the COVID-19 pandemic forced closure of on-campus classes statewide last spring. The spike in new cases in several states due to reopenings and the failure to wear masks is the latest on a long list of concerns for state officials. Hawaii has been among the most successful states to combat the spread of the virus, but has also seen an uptick in total cases in the past week.
