The Hawaii High School Athletic Association issued a warning of sorts on Wednesday to football players and coaches who are utilizing County facilities.
The HHSAA, which has a set date of Aug. 17 for resumption of football practice, is concerned about the issue. Team practices are permitted by counties within approved guidelines. However, those guidelines have not yet been approved by the Department of Health.
“We just wanted to tell everyone that although City and County (Parks and Recreation) facilities may be open, we haven’t officially opened out sports until our guidelines are approved,” said HHSAA official Russell Aoki.
Student-athletes using parks and fields to work out are in the clear. The concern is with high school coaches making the workouts mandatory. DOE coaches are under instructions to hold off on coaching their team’s players until the start date.
Fall sports, with the exception of football, are set to begin on Aug. 31. The fall season has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
