Penny Dreadful: City of Angels - Overkill?

Even in a series format, there were so many — too many — interesting characters for this show’s own good. Santa Muerte? The older brother becoming docile after being spared by Santa Muerte? Molly R.I.P. to end the 10th and final episode to end the first and perhaps only season?

I’m a sucker for a period piece, and the combination of Nazis, Chicanos and a corrupt LAPD provided plenty of conflict in old LA. Trouble is there are issues with a season 2, if there is one, without Sister Molly and the wonder kid rocket/bomb designer who was supposedly killed off by Nathan Lane’s detective, also in Ep. 10.

Frankly, the Chicano family — detective, gang banger and supermom — were interesting enough to warrant their own series. The supernatural elements were fun, but too rare.

Lots to like about PDCOA. It swung for the fences, and that is preferable to generic storylines. I’ll watch season 2 if it returns.
