In the back of Kalani Valley is a narrow gulch that has a sizable boulder basin above pristine Kalani Iki Estates. The ditch created to funnel rare, but potentially dangerous torrential rain water is a mix of lava rock walls, classic V-channel (ditch) construction.
When it passes on the Koko Head side of Kalani High School, Kalani Iki Stream goes under Kalanianaole Highway and resurfaces behind homes on pleasant, quiet Waianiani Place. The stream is still in ditch (concrete) form as it rolls beneath Waiholo Street, where the bridge has classic Kahala elements: square cross metal frame with concrete, vertical blocks. On the makai side of Waiholo Street, Kahala Iki Stream remains in ditch form for a few more feet, then rolls under a walk and cart bridge on the property of Waialae Golf Club. From there, Kalani Iki reverts back into the past, taking its natural, original form. No concrete as it ambles through the course to the Pacific Ocean.
Odd thing is it isn't mentioned or labeled on many maps. In fact, my phone map doesn't show the stream above the highway at all. No matter. For an unnamed and partially unmapped waterway, it proved to be a fun venture. Dry as a bone, but educational anyway.
