Wailupe Valley: Wailupe, Kulu‘i Streams

Depending on when you grew up, this area is all Wailupe, or there is a separation of Wailupe and Aina Haina. I tend to do what most folks do, which is deal with common usage, and that means this area is Aina Haina. Technically, the developed areas in the flat land is what most folks consider Aina Haina, still an ili in the ahupuaa of Wailupe. Update 9/4/20 Noticed that there is a side road that possibly provides a clear mauka view of the basin. (End of update.) Wailupe is the historical name. The physical name. Wailupe Gulch. Wailupe, the peninsula, the fish pond that was filled in and covered with houses. Wailupe Valley the school and Wailupe Valley playground, as labeled on old topography maps. Video: Pukele, Wai‘oma‘o, Palolo Streams

Tucked in the back of Palolo Valley, Pukele and Wai‘oma‘o Streams merge as Palolo Stream. Known previously as Kuekaunahi, Palolo Stream eventually merges with Manoa Stream and exits through the Manoa-Palolo Drainage Canal into the Ala Wai Canal. In its previous path, prior to the filling of the watershed to build Waikiki, Kuekaunahi exited near the intersection of ‘Ohua and Kalakaua Avenues, and was known there was Waikolu ("three waters"). One map from the late 1800s shows the stream with a different name as it flows through what is now Kapahulu: Pahoa. A resident walking along the stream and La‘i Road mentioned that the water is at only 50 percent of the level from decades ago. I can see why the residents somewhere around here fought against the plan to build a basin (reservoir?) as a flood-control mechanism. It would change the area drastically. Pia, Kūpaua and Niu Valleys — and Streams

As a kid growing up, I rarely ever traveled to East Honolulu. We were in Moiliili and the rest of our family lived westward. Niu Valley may as well have been Kailua or a neighbor island. Hoofing through this area was interesting. On the phone map, there is only one short canal. On the topography map, two streams up mauka come out of two respective valleys. It's unusual because similar areas in East Honolulu are considered gulches on the topo map, but these are specifically written as valleys. They are long, long distances, so maybe that's it. The west-side valley and stream, Pia, is like many East Honolulu basins. On the other side, Kūpaua was once the subject of interest for an exploratory well. That was, it appears, shot down after an archaeological find. That study was in 1994, and Kūpaua has remained relatively untouched beyond the residential zone.
