Izakaya Danji: Best Fried Tofu, Sake Clams

Sake-Steamed Clams

Fried Tofu

Chicken Namba

Grilled Corn

Chicken Wings (spicy)

Nishime

Leave it to @tanikaze to introduce someone like me — not a sushi/Japanese expert by any means — to the luscious offerings at Izakaya Danji. He mentioned that this place has been open a few months, but is already one of his favorites. Located on Beretania Street just ewa of Pensacola, open until 11 p.m. The food we had, amazing. The corn, sliced vertically and grilled with a nice teri-style sauce, so succulent and sweet. The Sake Steamed Clams is another gem. I almost drank that broth.

I did finish the broth for the nishime, which was outstanding. I never liked nishime until I got older, and now I crave it. The chicken wings (spicy is one of three styles they offer) were excellent. Crispy, crunchy and tender, and a little bigger than the average wing.

But the standouts on this all-star roster were the Chicken Nanban — chicken with tartar sauce (homemade) — and Fried Tofu. I love tartar sauce, hence there is none in my life (same with mayonnaise), and the one here at Danji is addicting, and the chicken is made to perfection. But the Fried Tofu is the best I've ever had. It is crispy and a little crunchy on the outside, then custard-tender inside. Mind. Blowing.

Danji is open after 5 p.m. Closed on Sundays.
