Lucy's Lab Creamery: Elegance of Cinnamon Toast Crunch

Not overpowering, but absolutely taste-bud tingling, the Cinnamon Toast Crunch ice cream — if it can be called that — at Lucy's Lab Creamery is unforgettable.

I had already sampled the Caramel Azuki. A really nice caramel flavor, but hardly any of my beloved azuki. Also sampled the Bacon Whiskey, which was fantasticly (I know, not a real word) blunt with its whiskey-as-a-grand-slam once it settled in. The bacon bits lost their baconny (yes) savoriness, though.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch has no crunch, but who cares? All of these flavors are still A+ to A- level. Lucy's Lab Creamery used to be a couple of blocks away, up mauka toward Kapiolani Blvd., next to the immortal Harry's Cafe. Unlike Harry's, though, Lucy's made a shrewd move into South Shore Market when the new building was constructed a year or so ago.

Harry's Cafe is iconic and doesn't need a new locale. Lucy's, though, benefits from the trendy surroundings, and while me and @tanikaze strolled around SSM for at least an hour, Lucy's was busy, busy, busy. Service is great. They even offer samples with miniature metal spoons.

I'm not going to compare Lucy's to another fabulous cold dessert joint like Via Gelato. One is ice cream. The other is gelato. One is heavy on the dairy base. The other works with a wider variety on the spectrum, particularly in fruit-rooted selections like Mountain Apple. But yes, I am looking forward to a scoop or two of that Bacon Whiskey sooner rather than later. It's a freaking hot summer, yep.
